Make Writing Your Full-Time Gig— 3 Foundational Tips I Swear By
Here’s how to get started and make your writing dreams a reality
I made an off-the-cuff video on TikTok earlier this year that talked about how I replaced my tech salary as a content writer working in my own business. The video didn’t go viral, but it did get a question in the comments.
“What tips do you have for someone who’s just getting started in freelancing?”
Though I tried, I couldn’t stuff all my thoughts into a tiny TikTok comment. Instead, I wanted to share what worked well here, hoping that this helps guide someone else from a dream of writing to writing full-time.
Here are the three tips I would recommend, based on my experiences so far.
1. Get your mindset right from the get-go.
With this, you need to believe that you can write, and actually get down to the act of writing on a consistent basis (always easier said than done).
Start creating the pieces that will become your writing samples for clients. For me, Medium was where some of my early writing samples lived.
Now, I don’t want this to be purely a plug for Medium, but it really did set incredible things in motion for me.
